Digital twins in medicine

Computer models of an organ or person, updated with real data, used to test “what if” scenarios.

Maturity: Research

How it works

Mechanistic physiology, imaging and patient data are combined — sometimes with machine learning — into a simulation that can be run forward under different treatments.

Why it matters

Researchers use models to plan procedures, design trials and run in-silico experiments that would be slow or impossible in people.

Limits & open questions

Models are only as good as their data and assumptions, and validating a personal twin against real outcomes is hard. Most uses today are research tools, not clinical decision-makers.
